Top 10 Rules for Success in Your Personal & Professional Life

You’ve worked hard to get where you’re at in your career.

You spent years in school, put in the hours early in your career when success was slow, and worked hard to build the relationships you have now.

While hard work and dedication are important, there’s more to your success than just the tasks you perform on the job. You also need to have personal integrity,  something that’s often more difficult to achieve.

Here are the top 10 rules to achieving success in your personal and professional life:

Let Go of Your Past

While your past can determine some of the circumstances of your current situation, it does not define you.

Maybe something traumatic happened in your past that left you with a professional setback, such as an illness or death. You veered off the path you were on and had to find your way back.

But just because something happened in the past doesn’t mean that you can’t move past  it and reclaim your life.

You are not a prisoner to your past, so stop letting the circumstances of what your life once was determine who you are today.

You are the master of your destiny. Decide what you want your life to look like and work for it.

Watch Your Mouth

Words matter, whether they’re used to help people or hurt them.

Yes, life can be stressful and you can have difficult days. However, if you allow your stress to get to you, and you snap at a family member, friend, or co-worker, you can’t take those words back.

Think carefully before you speak, and try hard to ensure that the majority of the words that come out of your mouth are positive and helpful.

Negative words lead to negative feelings, which can create an endless loop of negativity.

Taking some time to let your brain catch up to your mouth and thinking about how what you’re about to say may impact others can break this cycle and lead to better relationships and increased happiness.

Health over Wealth

As a dedicated professional, it can often feel as if you’re always chasing the next client.

Money is necessary to a happy, comfortable life. But it isn’t everything.

If you work to lead a life full of healthy, positive habits, more people will admire you for your accomplishments in that realm than for your wealth.

Constantly accumulating more material wealth can easily become an obsession. If you’re not feeling healthy, happy, and fulfilled, you’ll always be looking for a new way to collect more money and more material possessions.

However, if you maintain a health-conscious mindset and work on your overall wellness, you’re more likely to feel happy and satisfied with what you have.

Just Breathe

Life can feel like a never-ending rat race, and your days are spent rushing from one obligation to another.

But if you’re constantly burning the candle at both ends, you’re going to crash eventually.

One of the keys to continued success and productivity isn’t doing more with your days. It’s doing less.

Take some time each day to just sit and be quiet. Do your best to not think about your to-do list, or that big case you’re working on, or even all the chores that need to be done at home.

Just let yourself exist with your thoughts, pushing them out of your mind.

Even a few minutes per day can help you gain mental clarity and focus and improve your stress levels.

Honesty Is the Best Policy

Sometimes, it can feel as if you need to win at all costs.

But being honest – with yourself and with others – is much more important.

If you’re chasing success and being dishonest to get ahead, then you’re not really chasing true success.

Compromising your integrity just to win is going to come back around and bite you. Even if telling the truth causes you to be a little behind now, your honesty and integrity will put you ahead in the end.

Learn Balance

Focusing on only one area of your life is going to lead  very quickly to burnout.

Sure, there will be seasons of life where you have no choice but to focus most of your time and energy on work or your home life, but maintaining that singular focus for too long can cause problems.

Instead, work hard to have some form of balance in your life every day.

Spend time on your health and wellness, your family, and on hobbies at least a few days a week while also working hard.

And don’t try to multitask. When you’re home, be present at home. If you’re working out, don’t spend your time on the treadmill reviewing tasks from work.

Kindness Counts

People who are kind attract others to them.

And the more people you have on your side, the greater your success will be, even if it isn’t necessarily monetary success.

Give freely of your time, attention, and advice. When someone needs help, offer your help as long as it isn’t going to put too big a burden on you.

After all. Wouldn’t you rather be remembered for being kind than being professionally successful?

Embrace Change

Change can be scary, but it’s a necessary part of growth and life.

Whether you need to make a big location change, want to make a career move, or decide to overhaul your entire lifestyle, change can be a great thing.

Look at times of change as a way to grow as a person and learn more about your capabilities.

Not embracing change means you’re not growing, and you’re less likely to achieve the success you want in your life. Even though change can be difficult and cause you to make some tough decisions, looking at any life changes as potentially positive experiences will get you farther than resisting.

Control Your Emotions

No one enjoys being around the person who has angry outbursts whenever even small things don’t go their way.

You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control how you respond to it.

It’s unreasonable to think that you’ll be able to go through life never getting upset by anything or anyone. However, you can go through life calmly reacting to the things that happen and working to find a solution to problems.

You will find that, the better you are at controlling your outward emotions, the more people will want to be around you and the lower your stress levels will be.

Count Your Blessings

No matter what, it’s important to take time every day to realize how lucky you are.

Counting your blessings doesn’t mean you can never want anything in your life to improve or change. Instead, it simply means that you recognize that you have a great deal of advantages and even being able to choose to change something about yourself is a privilege.

Recognizing what’s going right in your life can help you keep from feeling that everything’s going wrong.
