3 Useful Emerging Technologies for Process Servers

The legal profession—process serving included—has made great strides over the last couple of decades in integrating new technology into the law. From computers to GPS tracking, service by social media to sophisticated databases, our work has become quicker and more complex. However, that doesn’t mean that process serving is going to stop now with its technical evolution. Here are three emerging technologies that are on the horizon for broad use in the process serving profession:

Digital Document Management Tools

Although process servers provide a necessary legal function, making sure our clients’ satisfaction is at the forefront of our work is important to us. Using digital document management tools, including things that allow for online document uploading 24/7 or paying bills online, gives clients flexibility to work when they want.

Additionally, digital notification systems, such as those that help you keep track of the status of your documents’ service, keep you informed whenever you need it. Gone are the days of waiting for a return phone call from your process server with an update about a summons; you can just check to see whether the papers have been served and if there were any issues with executing service.

e-Signing and Electronic Documentation Tools

When the COVID-19 pandemic brought the whole legal system (and the world) to a grinding halt, many courts and law firms turned to digital tools they could use from home to get work done. This is where e-signing, e-filing, and other electronic documentation tools began to shine.

Many of these tools were already in use in large areas of the country, but those professionals who had invested in them early were better able to adjust to the online documentation process and keep their cases on track.

Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence

Much has been said about ChatGPT, a chatbot that was launched in late 2022. And while that type of artificial intelligence (AI) is helpful in some spaces, that isn’t the kind of AI or machine learning technology that’s helpful to process servers.

Instead, AI and machine learning technologies are being leveraged to make long, involved tasks—including document review, legal research, and e-discovery—faster and more accurate. While the technology isn’t perfect, the very nature of AI and machine learning shows that, as time goes on, they’ll evolve to get continually better at their tasks.
